Health insurance is an integral part of Virginia Tech’s total compensation package. Health enrollment forms for new employees must be submitted within 30 days of the date of hire. The effective date of coverage will be the first day of the first full month of employment.

Health Plan Options

  • COVA Care (state-wide plan administered by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield),
  • COVA High Deductible Health Plan (state-wide plan administered by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield),
  • COVA Health Aware (state-wide plan administered by AETNA),
  • Kaiser Permanente (available to employees in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and parts of Maryland),
  • TRICARE Supplement (available to TRICARE eligible military retirees).

Each of these plans have employee assistance programs, which include up to four sessions for mental health, grief counseling, and legal or financial services (per plan member) at no charge.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Deadline: Enrollment form must be submitted within 30 days of date of hire.

Flexible Spending Accounts allow you to set aside part of your pay each pay period on a pre-tax basis for medical or dependent care expenses.


Retirement

Deadline (for faculty): Enrollment form must be submitted within 60 days of date of hire.

Regular and restricted full-time and part-time salaried staff are covered by the Virginia Retirement System. Faculty employees may participate in the Virginia Retirement System Hybrid Plan (a combination of defined benefit and defined contribution plan) or in an Optional Retirement Plan (a defined contribution plan).


Voluntary Retirement

Automatic Enrollment: Must opt-out of 457(b) within 90 days of the date of hire (excludes VRS Hybrid plan).

Employees are offered several choices of investment options to supplement their retirement plans. Employees may participate in either a 403(b) tax deferred savings plan, the 457(b) deferred compensation plan, or both.

The state also provides cash match benefits to assist eligible employees in preparing for retirement.

Employer Provided Life Insurance

Deadline: No enrollment forms are required. Beneficiary needs to be assigned.

Virginia Tech provides life insurance for its employees. The university pays the premium for all benefited faculty and staff employees. The program is administered through the Virginia Retirement System with Minnesota Life as the insurance carrier.

The coverage is the current annual salary rounded up to the nearest thousand and doubled. In cases of accidental death, a double indemnity clause provides the beneficiary double the amount of insurance. To designate beneficiaries, submit a Beneficiary Designation Form (VRS2).

Optional Life Insurance

Optional Supplemental Life Insurance Deadline: Enrollment form must be submitted within 31 days of the date of hire to be issued without a medical exam. Guarantee issue limit is up to $375,000 without a medical exam.

In addition to the employer paid life insurance, employees may purchase additional life insurance through Minnesota Life.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

Deadline: Eligible to enroll anytime.

Employees have the opportunity to purchase Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance.

Aflac

Deadline: Enrollment form must be submitted within 30 days of the date of hire.

Virginia Tech offers various plan options through Aflac. Employees may choose the policy(ies) that best suit their needs.
